Three Interview Questions That Have Proven Efficient For Me

Through my experience recruiting for various roles, from basic to mid-level positions, I’ve found that certain interview questions consistently provide deep insights into candidates' suitability for the job. These questions are effective not only in understanding the applicant’s qualifications but also in gauging their true fit for the role. Here are my top three questions:



1. "Where do you see yourself in two years?"

Purpose: This question helps uncover the candidate's long-term vision and passion for the job.

Why It Works: By asking where they see themselves in two years, you can gauge whether the candidate is genuinely interested in the role or if they are simply looking for any job. Their response can reveal their commitment to their career path, their ambitions, and whether their goals align with the company’s objectives.

What to Look For: A well-thought-out answer that aligns with the role and company’s growth opportunities indicates a motivated and forward-thinking candidate. On the other hand, vague or disjointed responses might suggest a lack of genuine interest or direction.

2. "Can we do a quick role play to simulate a common scenario you might face in this job?"

Purpose: This question tests the candidate's practical knowledge and problem-solving skills in real-time.

Why It Works: Role plays provide immediate insight into how a candidate handles typical job scenarios, their approach to problem-solving, and their level of preparedness for the role. It also allows you to see their reactions and decision-making processes under simulated pressure.

What to Look For: Effective role play responses reveal the candidate’s understanding of the job, their ability to think on their feet, and their practical skills. Observe their problem-solving approach, communication style, and how they apply their knowledge to the situation.

3. "What kind of person can you not work with?"

Purpose: This question helps uncover the candidate’s personal values and working style.

Why It Works: The way candidates answer this question can shed light on their compatibility with the team and company culture. It’s a good way to identify potential red flags and to understand what kind of work environment they thrive in.

What to Look For: Genuine responses reveal insights into the candidate’s values, conflict resolution style, and what they find challenging in a work setting. Watch for honesty and self-awareness in their answer, and consider how their preferences align with your team dynamics and company culture.
